Running tights
are a key piece for most runners, especially those who routinely run
in colder weather. Good running tights share a few qualities: First,
they keep a runner warm when it is colder outside, and dry if it
might be sprinkling. Second, they can help a runner’s muscles and
ligaments stay more flexible. Finally, a good running tight can
actually help with recovery after the run.
One
of the more popular types of running tights in recent years has been
what is known as
compression
tights. Compression tights fit very snugly, and have
built-in support that keeps pressure off of the knee joint, keeps
firmness around muscles and tendons, and ensures that a running for
is supported. Compression tights have become very popular among avid
runners and triathletes because of the support they provide during
runs and the recovery benefits after a hard workout. Because a good
pair of compression tights aides in the process of blood flow and
healing, they can actually help runners recover faster and get back
into hard runs quickly. Some athletes even choose to sleep in their
compression tights, as they claim they wake up with their legs
feeling much better.
Compression
tights are not cheap, however. Lower-end compression tights usually
cost $75 to $100, and high quality compression tights routinely range
from $150 to $200. It can be worth it, though, if you have lingering
leg issues that you need to help heal.
Thermal
tights, unlike compression tights, are made primarily for warmth.
Most runners who have a closet full of
cold
weather running gear have at least one pair of good thermal
tights. Thermal tights do not fit as snugly as compression tights,
and don’t offer the structural support. They do, however, keep a
runner or cyclist warmer into much lower temps. Whereas a compression
tight keeps a runner warm down to about 30 degree Fahrenheit, a good
thermal tight can keep a runner warmer in temps below zero. Thermal
tights are less costly then compression tights, ranging from $60 to
$100 per pair.
Don’t
forget about running tights for your stable of running or athletic
gear. Running tights can help extend your season and help you enjoy
cooler weather workouts.
