On-Page Optimization
By thomas qwer | Published  12/16/2011

Search engine optimization is a complex science, made up of a number of elements that affect how your website is ranked by Google and other search engines. One of these elements is the content on and in your pages themselves.

Because it's entirely under your control, on-page optimization is the first recourse of many SEO Orange County experts and a strategy that can yield notable results fairly quickly. What's included in on-page optimization?

  • Title: Your title may be the most important visible content on your page. Because it will be read first by search engines, it should contain your best and most accurate keywords.

  • HTML and meta tags: The actual coding that underlies your site plays a role in how search engines index. Meta tags, in particular, are important to some search engines, though not to others. These should contain important keywords.

  • Links: What kinds of websites do you link to from your pages, and how are the links shared? Embedded links (in text, rather than including the entire URL) are best, and should only link to high-quality sites.

  • Image tags: Google also reads and indexes the visible and meta descriptions on any photos or other graphics you included on your pages. This is another great place to include appropriate keywords.

  • Content: Last but not least, the content or text that fills your pages is important to search engines. The most effective copy for SEO purposes includes high-value keywords, scattered naturally throughout the text, but not too much: too many keywords, used unnaturally, is considered "keyword stuffing"; search engines know to recognize this tactic and lower the website's ranking accordingly.
